Barnet Business Expo
"Bringing back community spirit and helping people thrive so that local businesses and entrepreneurs can get local support has been a really rewarding accomplishment."
Where it all started
Growing up, I was surrounded by people who had their own companies, so I’ve always been keen to work for myself and create my own business. Throughout my working life, I have had the opportunity to gain a vast amount of experience in a range of different fields, from beauty to food to cars. I began to realise that my passion, no matter what field I was involved with, was to help other people and offer my experience to them.

This awareness led to the creation of my current work, organising a range of exhibitions, including the Barnet Business Expo and Hendon Health and Wellness Expo. These exhibitions provide a day for entrepreneurs, business start-ups and the resident community to network and explore the future of local business.

In addition, I also help set-up business workshops for a range of bigger companies, such as Google Digital Garage and NatWest Bank and I organise multiple business support groups, including Barnet Repair Cafe and Christmas Gift Bank. By marketing and promoting these groups, I am able to increase the awareness and attendance numbers, furthermore, I can encourage further networking among attendees and grow support for future local events.

Key Achievements
Organising expos and workshops in my local community and abroad.

Building a platform for start-ups, small businesses and established businesses to help them support each other.

Business Learnings
I’ve found a range of benefits that have arisen from running my own business. Being my own boss means that I have a much better work and home life balance. I am able to have a greater degree of flexibility and ensure I can spend quality time with my family.

Working with local businesses means I am playing a part in promoting the local economy and this, in turn, leads to the creation of more jobs.

Meeting new people is where I thrive, so I love knowing that my job allows me to help other people.

Future Goals
Covid halted many plans that I had for the business, so going forwards, I will be continuing to organise the exhibitions which were postponed. I am keen to expand the number of exhibitions that I run each year.

I would also like to create a Barnet Business Expo YouTube channel to showcase various businesses within the community to present their stories and journey to a wider audience.

Chat Naturally
"I love helping people to find their English ‘identities’ and to discover ways of speaking that add to their message rather than distract from it."
Where it all started
Two years ago, I would never have imagined that I would be running my own business today. With an undergraduate degree in languages, I began my career working for the Japanese government as an English language trainer, television presenter and columnist [TV1] advising on intercultural relations and language. I went on to teach business professionals in Latin America before running a successful English language school in London.

I was well-qualified and spoke five languages, but I had to give up my job as principal when I became a mother because it wasn’t possible to adapt my role to part-time hours. From that point on, my career took a back seat and finding a stable part-time job that was gratifying or stimulating was a constant challenge. Gradually, I lost confidence in myself and my abilities. I lost my sense of self and I struggled to feel anything other than negativity. After eight years, I came to the realisation that I needed to make a change, although I wasn’t sure how.

I clearly remember despondently picking up an issue of ‘Barnet First’ from the doormat and seeing the advert for the Rebel Business School. I’d had ideas in the past but never had any real intention of starting my own business because I felt like I didn’t have the knowledge, energy or confidence. That day I realised I needed to focus on the future and do something, anything, so I signed up!

One year on and I have a company called Chat Naturally and I am an online Neurolanguage® Accent Reduction Coach. I provide British pronunciation and accent reduction programmes to corporate and individual clients, which enable non-native English-speaking professionals to develop a more neutral accent, gain confidence and authenticity in their communication and increase their professional impact. Every programme of sessions I create is a bespoke roadmap, unique to each client which means I can deliver brain-friendly coaching built around their motivation and pronunciation goals.

Key Achievements
I founded Chat Naturally and qualified as an ICF accredited language coach in the middle of the pandemic. I am also excited to be the first person in the world to combine Neurolanguage Coaching® with accent reduction and my client list is growing rapidly thanks to referrals alone.

By taking one small step and signing up for a course, I discovered the self that I had lost, including my positivity and ambition, which in turn has re-kindled my passion for linguistics and pronunciation

I have managed to create the right balance for me of being a mum and having a job I love and can control, (although keeping that balance isn’t always easy!)

Business Learnings
Setting up a business is not just something other people do. It is far less complicated than I had imagined, so my experience has been eye-opening and a complete game-changer.

Even in these unprecedented and challenging times so many things are possible, and I feel incredibly thankful to have discovered a new perspective on life and to be able to give something back.

Future Goals

I’d love to support more Japanese and Spanish / Latin corporations and their employees, as my knowledge of both languages means that I understand the pronunciation and communication difficulties that can exist.
I have several exciting plans up my sleeve for 2022, so do follow or message me on LinkedIn to stay updated.

Gabriella Gambetta

Manic Rave Vintage
"Mainstream fashion follows certain palettes and trends every season, so as a creative, I find this restrictive. I believe in creating our own individual looks to express ourselves freely."
Where it all started
I studied fashion at university, but I wasn’t sure the industry would be for me as it appeared to be fake and pretentious. I enjoyed the creation process, but I realised my gothic-style designs didn’t have much of an audience.

During this time, I became more aware of the vintage market. I was drawn to the history and quality of the clothing and I loved the ability to adapt pieces or modify them to take them to a new level. The sustainability also provided better value than items found on the high street.

Five years ago, I met Rina, my partner’s Grandma, who was an Italian dressmaker from the 50’s. I used to take vintage pieces with me when I visited her and we would sit together and hand embroider over any holes or customise the items to make them a bit more personal. I learnt so much from her, especially sewing buttonholes by hand, which have now become a signature of mine.

During the Rebel Business School, I set up Manic Rave Vintage. Rina (who passed to Covid in March 2020) inspired me to build a brand using traditional techniques of hand sewing and embroidery.

Key Achievements
I set up my Etsy shop in November, selling vintage and re-worked pieces and I have already made a few sales. I have also taken part in Virtual Vintage Fairs.

Manic Rave Vintage was something I wanted to push because, having a disability, not all employers are understanding. I also believe the pandemic spurred me on. I came to a point of working at a job I was so unhappy in and I just wanted to do something I love and am passionate about.

I have created a more relaxed, funny side to Manic Rave Vintage by introducing my Dad with his own online character, Papa Rave. This is to show that even at 80 years old, you can still rock vintage and prove that clothing can be gender neutral.

Business Learnings
I would rather try and fail, than not try at all. I have more drive and passion to push my own business and ideas. Being able to create this business has given me confidence in myself and in my choices. I might not be making bucket-loads of money, but I am happy. It’s not easy but I’m determined to make it work.

I believe it is nice to have a story behind each item so instead of choosing wholesale stock, I like to source my fabrics internationally so that I can personally select each piece. The pandemic has meant I’ve slightly struggled to get new stock in but I don’t like throwing fabrics away so I can always re-work pieces to be more ethical and eco-friendlier.

Future Goals
I really want to build up my brand by developing my website and creating more audience engagement on social media. I can’t wait to get out there and interact with potential customers. I’m hoping once restrictions lift, I can keep pushing my dream ahead and get my own market stall.

Hair Care Revolution
"Being self-employed is about doing work that makes a difference, that I care about and am happy to do even when it’s hard or challenging, which of course does happen sometimes."
Where it all started
For over ten years, my background in marketing and branding gave me the opportunity to work with
some of the biggest brands in the world, but in 2016, I decided that I wanted to explore options that would allow me to become a dominant force within a sector, rather than be a participant within one.
This thought led me into looking for new opportunities I could apply my skills and interests to. It became apparent that the cosmetics industry was, and still is, in dire need of both innovation and application of emerging technologies. I began to organise hair and beauty events in the summer of 2017 to learn about the sector and build up my network.

Our dynamic Hair Care Revolution pop-up experiences are held across London in unique locations several times a year. The events offer visitors the opportunity to learn about hair and beauty from the best professionals in the industry via bespoke workshops and seminars. The pop-ups have evolved into a platform which enables the best brands in the market to engage directly with the public in a fun and vibrant atmosphere. Women and families have been the main audience at the events which have grown in size and scale since the initial inception. Each event has a theme which adds to the entertaining and educational experience.

Key Achievements
We proudly won an award in 2019 for the best community event. The community has now grown into an international network of over 6,000 people with thousands of inspired people now better educated about their hair and skin through our events and initiatives.

We have worked with some of the biggest brand names such as L’Oreal and Andre Walker and some of the most talented hair and skin professionals across the world. I have also been asked to speak at dozens of events up and down the country regarding the future of cosmetics, including at the Houses of Parliament.

Business Learnings
Running my own business provides two main things; the first is the satisfaction of creating my own destiny and following a calling I am passionate about, the second is the feeling of knowing the work I do has a positive impact on the lives of others. As an example, individuals who have met through the platform have gone into business together and/or directly bought products and services from one another as a result of the existence of Hair Care Revolution.

Self-employment means you only have yourself to congratulate or to blame for successes and failures; it’s not for the faint-hearted or the work-shy.

Future Goals
The team is committed to community development. Our ambition is to create jobs in local communities and give people the opportunity to learn, grow and excel as the platform expands its capacity to create such opportunities.

Development is almost complete on a ground-breaking cosmetic technology we have innovated. We are very excited to share this with the world in 2021.

Picture

Millie Anozia

LGBO Language Teacher
"I started teaching out of passion. I am also passionate about not allowing my language to go into extinction as predicted by UNESCO."
Where it all started
In wanting to pass on my rich heritage to my daughter, I recognised that it would be beneficial to have more Igbo language speakers in her age group. I started teaching Igbo language face-to-face with my daughter and a couple of family members / non-Igbo spouses for free. I was encouraged to begin running summer classes, which were well received. However, I was slowed down due to limited resources so I attended the Rebel Business School to learn how to scale-up the business.

It was refreshing to learn tips on how to start with few resources and I immediately put them into practice. Following up on leads from this exercise enabled me to register on an online language platform. This immediately connected me with ready buyers and I could access students from all over the world.

Future Goals
I am so grateful for how far I’ve come but a lot more needs to be done. I have relied on keeping costs down at the moment, but my next project is to scale-up and ensure the business is not dependent on me in the way that it is at the moment. I also seek to gain more engagement with local authorities to support families and business projects.

Key Achievements
I started off with very few students, but they have now become significant ambassadors of my business. Consequently, I’ve had more referred business come my way.

Before lockdown, I had 7 face-to-face students and had taught fewer than 50 lessons online. I have now taught over 600 lessons online and am registered to teach on other language platforms too. I have been able to create and develop more language and culture packages to meet client needs.

I was invited to speak at the 2020 Polyglot Conference to share insights into the Igbo world. https://www.facebook.com/realtalkwithmillie/videos/161830482353320

I was also invited to speak to a group of progressive Nigerian people to promote the Igbo language. https://www.facebook.com/realtalkwithmillie/videos/901690530293267

Business Learnings
I am so grateful that I started this business before the pandemic hit. With lockdown adding home-schooling to my plate, I was unable to go back to paid employment, so it has helped my mental wellbeing to be fully engaged in building the business. Lockdown also meant I had to move all my face-to-face students to online teaching. It was a struggle to adjust to the changes initially, but I’m fully adapted now.

I am now confident to set prices and offer more packages to new and old clients alike. This has reduced the wasted time spent chasing clients who appear to be interested but can't afford or commit to lessons for various reasons.

Orthotist
"I think the Rebel course should be taught at universities, colleges or even in schools. It really teaches whether you have enough incentive for your business idea and whether it is the right option for you."
Where it all started
Seven years ago, I received my five years refugee status in the UK. I really wanted to get my Health and Care Professions Council registration to work as an Orthotist or Prosthetist in the UK, but I needed to pass my English language exams and get access to my undergraduate and masters degree documentation from my Iranian universities. For three years, I worked as a receptionist in a hotel to pay the bills while persevering to pass my exams. I eventually managed to get an orthotist job at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital, but unfortunately my contract was not renewed, and I became jobless.

With free time on my hands, I thought about what else I could do with my life. I’d always loved the thought of having my own business and I came up with the idea of making natural hair gel as I’d been making it for myself for years. I did lots of research into the industry and the ins and outs of business before being introduced to the Rebel Business School. The course taught me so many new things and ideas about how to start a business from scratch.

I realised that I would need £600 to test my product and although I had money in savings, I didn’t want to spend it without knowing all aspects of my business and whether I would be successful or not. So, with Covid and the lockdown scenario, I started to think that the beauty industry might not be the best fit for me at this time. Given that I still needed to pay my rent and bills, I decided to go back to my alternative options and apply for jobs related to my field of study.

Key Achievements
I learnt not to lose any opportunity, even if it is not appealing to begin with. When one recruitment agency called me to arrange an interview with a very well-known company in my field, I said yes straight away even though I was pessimistic about them. I went for the interview and ended up getting the job within a week. Every day I feel myself loving my job more and more.

Business Learnings
Self-development parts of the course really helped me to pay attention to my attitude towards alternative options and other jobs in general. I learnt not to be disappointed if I wasn’t successful in something and instead to think about the reasons behind my success or failure and what the outcome could teach me.

Before I started the course, I was rejected from three interviews as an orthotist and one for a job selling orthotic devices. I thought about all the reasons for the rejections; it could have been that I wasn’t good enough, I wasn’t compatible with the team or my English needed improvement. I realised the key was actually to study the art of how to interview well. I watched YouTube interview tip videos every day and started to memorise some of the answers.

Future Goals
I still make hair gel for myself and I enjoy my job knowing that I’m helping people with all my knowledge and experience. I went so far exploring my business idea, so who knows, maybe one day when all the beauty salons re-open again, I will start to think about my little business again.

Blockchain
"Diversifying into digital online training has opened many previously under-appreciated niches in the global digital space. During the pandemic, we’ve worked with clients from the US, Mexico, Jamaica, Uganda, Ghana, Dubai and throughout the UK and Europe."
Where it all started
We started the company in August 2018 with the intention of bringing blockchain and digital technologies to the masses. With new innovations in technology, we wanted to enable less established organisations e.g. small businesses and SMEs, to compete in a wider marketplace and on a global scale.

Omegachain’s ‘Inclusive!’ Academy was created as a training consultancy that specialises in corporate and community training via bespoke digital platforms. The academy was established by a team of professional trainers with over 30 years of combined experience, who are renowned for their success in facilitating a vast portfolio of work-based skills training.

Key Achievements
Our expansion of services include: Leading Blockchain, Digital Management Transformation, CX, Onboarding, OSINT, Online Digital Training and Digital Forensics.

We have worked on various contracts from the largest global banking corporation to an SME UK hair training academy. Our services have also diversified to include upstart global cryptocurrency with trading taking place on the cryptocurrency markets, business modelling, website design and social media and digitation management for several personal trainers.

Our ‘Employability’ and ‘Back to Work’ Inclusive! Academy programs have an 88% success rate.

Since lockdown, we have had to reposition our services to concentrate on ‘Digitisation in the COVID Era’. Through business analysis, project development and design work, we’ve found a strong need for online training for corporations, SMEs and entrepreneurs so have developed digital training material for Covid19 certification, GDPR, health and safety, cyber security awareness, working from home, work/life balance and wellbeing. We have also been involved with a social media marketing campaign for Covid19 Defogging Sanitation Servicing for nurseries, schools and gymnasiums.

Business Learnings
The first two years were difficult. Uncertainty over Brexit caused organisations to cut their financial budgets allocated to new or innovation technologies. At the end of 2018, we went into a partnership agreement with Amazon web services and Ideasoft (a software development team in Lithuania) to prepare us for an uncertain Brexit. It took a while to learn how to differentiate suitable clients from the time wasters and tricksters who wanted free services, so we ended up chasing more leads than we secured in paying jobs.

At the end of 2019, we landed a contract to design, build and develop an onboarding and document process for Deutche Boerse Group in Frankfurt (the largest stock exchange company in the world!). We were flown to Germany every week, all expenses paid and thought we had finally made it, until the pandemic hit. We were forced to work remotely from home in the UK but successfully fulfilled our deliverables even under such a sudden work transformation.

Future Goals
Whilst we are in challenging times, we are still optimistic about Omegachain’s future because the pandemic has forced us to be more agile and customer experience driven. We are providing quality and value whilst guiding our clients to the most efficient digital transformations and training through our online workshop delivery platform.

Festival in a Bag
"Festival in a Bag is a unique festival product which provides convenience with a sustainability message. If you believe in a concept, I think you should do everything you can to bring it to life."
‘Festival in a Bag is a unique festival product which provides convenience with a sustainability message. If you believe in a concept, I think you should do everything you can to bring it to life.’

Where it all started
Sitting at my kitchen table New Year 2019, I wondered what I could do business-wise for the foreseeable future, based around something my children would like. As ‘festival-goers’, I thought of the hours I had spent running around buying camping items over the years, only for it to be destroyed, left behind, loaned out never to be seen again.

I designed Festival in a Bag and made a few cosmetic changes until I was happy with it and the logo came out of a doodling session. I showed the concept to a few friends, listened to their pros and cons and tweaked where necessary.

The vision was to create a product and its contents that would be sustainable and reusable. By having a product that can be reused countless times, with a message of ‘re-use or re-cycle me’ running throughout our website and on the bags, it’s something which the ‘festival-goer’ is now identifying with. We certainly don’t want to preach, but the festival demographic is certainly more environmentally aware than it was several years ago.

Festival in a Bag is a rucksack which contains a sleeping bag, two-person double-skin tent, camping mat, water bottle and personal hygiene kit. All you need to do is add your clothes, wellies and other bits and pieces and off you go to a festival. It’s a one-stop-shop solution in a bag. All bags have an individual number on them, which can be registered and if found, relocated to its owner. It’s all part of the accountability of attending a festival.

Key Achievements
My initial order was for 1,000 bags and contents and before I knew it, I was ready to trade in May 2019 with routes to market via Instagram, a homemade website, word of mouth, influencers, and a festival ticket agency. Creating an online presence was important because I didn’t want to sell direct at festivals as it would mean attendees would still have to bring bags full of clothes and camping equipment with them.

By the end of August 2019, I had sold out and had also taken some orders from Europe and the USA. In November 2019, I was asked to make a presentation to a panel of investors who were interested in investing. I was successful in getting funding which allowed me to go direct to festival promoters and companies via their contacts. To top off 2019, I won an award in the UK Festivals Shortlisted Innovation Category.

Business Learnings
Throughout my life, I have worked in advertising, architecture and education so I’ve gained a breadth of busines acumen. My knowledge of the festival market was slightly limited, and it has certainly been a big learning curve. Trying to get access to the right person in big corporate companies can be soul destroying!

The orange bag has moulded my brand and given me a strong following on social media platforms. Being self-employed has given me the ability to create a unique business opportunity and to explore my capabilities as an entrepreneur. My work-life balance is good as it still allows me time to play golf, develop the business and explore other avenues.

Future Goals
As the festival market evolves, so will we. Sponsorship and partnership opportunities are now arising, and our plan is to grow sales in Europe. As a society, there is a demand for products at the click of a button and with next-day delivery, so developing a more visible online presence is in the pipeline.

Presenter Katie Coombes running a PopUp in-person course.
PopUp Business School, which has already proved inspirational for scores of people across Kent, is taking its unique approach online, allowing would-be entrepreneurs and anyone who would like to make money from their hobby to access the course from home.

The five-day business course, which encourages people to use their existing skills to make money by doing something they love, takes a unique ‘no red tape’ approach to the challenge of setting up a new business – with considerable success.
That approach has seen the PopUp team enjoy numerous successes, with people like Faversham’s Joanna Van Blommestein, who now trades as The Bra Boss of Kent, setting up in business after a “life changing” week on a course at Westwood Cross in Thanet.

In 2019 alone, PopUp helped 967 new businesses start up as a result of organising 37 courses across the country – all free, thanks to sponsorship by local support programmes to help new businesses in their area. They range from swimming coaching to cake making and from bookkeeping to fitness training.

Research shows that in 2019, PopUp’s 37 UK events contributed £19.2m to the local economy, including benefits savings of nearly £8m as people turned their hobbies and interests into business ventures.

With the Covid-19 pandemic putting an end to physical gatherings for the foreseeable future, PopUp has now set up a Kent-wide ‘virtual’ course that will follow exactly the same pattern but will be held online for five days from Monday 3 August.

Joanna, who kept costs down by setting up her business in a summer house in her garden, said the advice to “start small, get help from friends and contacts and don’t run up big debts” was spot on.

PopUp’s philosophy is firmly against people borrowing large amounts of money or worrying too much about business plans. “Our courses are aimed at people who dream of making money from something they love,” explained PopUp's Chief Operations Officer Henry Nicholson. “We inspire them to have a go and help them develop the skills they need, but we don’t encourage them to get into debt.”

That advice has proved invaluable during the Covid-19 pandemic. “If I had borrowed lots of money to set up, I really would have been struggling to pay my debts by now,” Joanna explained. “Because I set things up simply, I coped with the crisis and now the lockdown is easing I am fully booked for several weeks ahead.”

The online PopUp will run in the same way as the physical events, with sessions on all aspects of business, from sales, social media and networking through to setting up a free website and marketing. “We cover topics like tax and business structure, too, but we leave those until the end of the week because it’s more important to focus on your dream than on the technical issues,” Henry added.

“We will have the same level of engagement via the online platform and we will even be able to set up break out ‘rooms’ for group discussions,” he said. “It will be exactly the same as attending a physical event but without any travel costs or childcare concerns."

“As a society, we’ve had a tremendous challenge over the past few months with our small businesses and communities feeling the brunt of it. Now is the most important time to be helping, supporting and empowering people to keep going and build something incredible."

“If you have ever dreamed of setting up your own business – and we know that Covid-19 has had a big impact on the workforce – then this is the course for you. Bring that dream along and we will show you how to turn it into a business.”

The online event is part of an £8.6m, cross-channel project called Increase Valorisation Sociale (Increase VS), which is using European cash to deliver free workshops aimed at kick-starting small businesses and creating jobs.
It is being sponsored by West Kent Housing Association, Orbit Housing, Southern Housing Group, Town & Country Housing, Swale Borough Council, Hyde Housing and Optivo.

Amongst other things, they have been called Earth's Mightiest Heroes and A Ragtag Bunch of Misfits. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them... maybe you can hire The PopUp Team.
Picture
We wanted to help you get to know the individual members that make up the PopUp Team so you can understand what makes us tick.

This week we PopUp's chaos coordinator and lead of all things creative: Jack Aling!

Who are your biggest inspirations in life and business?

I have never met a more diverse and inspiring community than the PopUp Team and all of the people we meet at our events across the world. Simon and Alan picked me up in 2016 and completely changed my direction in life at a time when I desperately needed it and for that I will forever be grateful. Since then, I have listened to so many individual stories and hearing how people have got through their adversities gives me the motivation to get out of bed in the morning.

Some of you know, I do like to watch the occasional film. There are so many filmmakers, directors, creatives and storytellers that inspire me and have shaped my humour, personality and the person I am today. I am an avid believer on the transformative power of film.

What songs gets you motivated?

I believe that motivational music needs to be played at ear-damaging levels to be properly experienced. I compiled a few songs that will make you feel unstoppable, clear your skin and improve your grades.

What is your key piece of advice for small businesses at this time?

We are in new territory. The words "once in a lifetime opportunity" have been thrown around a lot and what I have learnt is to find your own pace. Don't feel pressured to compete with others.
Use this time to redefine productivity, figure out what works for you. The world may not be on pause but it has certainly slowed - use this time to learn, do whatever you want and see what sticks. Do a little bit of something, figure out what you define as a successful day and work towards it.
If you and your business can come out of this stronger and re-energised then that's the biggest win.

Who are three people dead or alive you would invite to dinner?

Edgar Wright & Bo Burnham (I am combining because the more the merrier.)
These two gentlemen have had a huge impact in shaping my humour and outlook on the world. Their work whether it be directing, writing or performing inspire me to push myself to create greatness in anything I do.

James Watt
Speaking on behalf of Generation Z, Craft Beer is great and if you like your drinks with some flavour and personality, I'd recommend giving it a go. (Or be boring and stick to your Fosters.)
James Watt and the work he has done with the team at Brewdog proves that a new fresh alternative way of thinking works and I bet he has some great stories that he could bring to the table (James FYI You are providing the drinks.)

Andrew Rea
Food and cooking is one of my favourites creative pastimes. Where many chefs like Gordon Ramsay have inspired me, Andrew Rea (otherwise known online as Binging with Babish) was one of the first people to make great cooking feel achievable plus his show that recreates food from TV & Film is well up my street. (Andrew FYI You are providing the food.)

What has been your biggest learning in the past year?

Don't think. Do.
So many people live in this "what if" universe. They sit around thinking of what they could do rather than giving it a go.
What if I could start that business? What if I could achieve that goal?
By setting small achievable targets and taking action in any way you can, you will be massively surprised in how much you can get done in such a short amount of time.

What are some resources that have had the biggest impact on you?

Atomic Habits - James Clear
A quick and instantly actionable read that proves that small tiny changes to your habits can have massive and life changing results.

Business for Punks - James Watt (Read online for free!)
The story of Brewdog and the punk way to take no prisoners and live and breathe what you believe in massively inspires my
values and outlook into life & business.

About Time - Directed and Written by Richard Curtis
A film is a resource right? A beautifully made (very) British film which has helped shape how I look at life, relationships and making the most of every moment.

We wanted to help you get to know the individual members that make up the PopUp Team so you can understand what makes us tick.

This week we meet the king of metaphors and one of our brilliant trainers: Liam Sibley!

Who are your biggest inspirations in life and business?

I find my inspirations in the small actions of people day to day.
Those facing adversity, challenging themselves and stepping out of their comfort zone amongst friends and colleagues. I wouldn’t be in the place I am now without the PopUp Team and Henry encouraging me to get stuck in. They’ve helped mould me into the man I am today, helped me to strive to be better and enjoy a better life.

What songs gets you motivated?

I couldn't just decide on one - but I have made a motivational playlist of the songs that get me pumped.

What is your key piece of advice for small businesses at this time?

It’s not going to be easy, but just take it one step at a time. If we’re already experts and already at out our goals, they wouldn’t be our current goal. They’d be achievements. Keeping pushing and working towards the next achievement!

Who are three people dead or alive you would invite to dinner?

Chester Bennington -
The former front man of Linkin park. One of my earlier memories is my dad putting the special edition CD of Meteora in the car and it shaped my music taste to this day.

Claudio Sanchez -
Author, songwriter and frontman of Coheed and Cambria. The dude is a creative genius... not only writing countless albums of music but also a comic book series directly linking to each song.

Henry Cavill -
Actor known for his work in The Witcher, Mission Impossible and as Superman. He publicly speaks out about his interests and hobbies that align greatly with myself (nerd chat would be unreal)!

What has been your biggest learning in the past year?

It doesn’t matter what life throws at you – there’s always a way to have fun, learn and make an impact.
Sometimes stepping back and asking yourself “What was this designed to teach me?” then try find the learning in it.

What are some resources that have had the biggest impact on you?

This week we meet one of our fantastic trainers: Katie Coombes!

Who are your biggest inspirations in life and business?

My wife Lynsey, My Dad and Michelle Obama.
When I have a dilemma or a business question,
I always ask Lynsey first, think what would my Dad have done, then what would Michelle do?

It can get confusing as the answers tend to conflict !

What songs gets you motivated?

There are loads. Depends what mood I am in.
But Bryan Ferry – Lets Stick Together is always my go to.
It has a great intro. I imagine walking on stage to massive applause waving at my adoring fans.
I have a vivid imagination.

What is your key piece of advice for small businesses at this time?

Focus on your customers. 100 percent.
What do they want from you at this time?
How can you serve them now?

Who are three people dead or alive you would invite to dinner?

My Dad (dead for 20 years),
My Mum (alive but with dementia, I would like her to attend pre- dementia)
My Brother (very much alive, love him though drives me a bit mad)

I would like to say all the stuff I wished I had said before my dad died and before my mum got ill. This has reminded me to tell my brother that I love him.

What has been your biggest learning in the past year?

Confidence is a superpower.
When I feel confident, I believe I am capable of so much. I have to continue to work on my confidence every single day.

This week we meet one of our noicest project manager: Alex Meade.

Who are your biggest inspirations in life and business?

My biggest inspirations in life are those who lead by example.
You naturally pick up traits and characteristics of the 5 people you hang around with most. The close network of friends and family around me are the people I would be happy to pick up traits from.

What songs gets you motivated?

Fireball by Pitball

What is your key piece of advice for small businesses at this time?

  • Your network is your net-worth.
  • Add value before you do anything.
  • Be interested, not interesting.
  • Done is better than perfect.
  • Put your personality into what you do.
  • Life only moves forward once you’re outside your comfort zone.
  • Learn from your failures.
  • It’s never too late to learn something new
  • “Live, laugh, love” - Karen 2014

Who are three people dead or alive you would invite to dinner?

Vanessa Hudgens - Just so I can brag that I've been to dinner with Vanessa Hudgens...
Barack Obama - Inspirational family man, leader, decision maker.
Lucas Botkin - Young business owner, dedicated to teaching, training and helping others.

What has been your biggest learning in the past year?

Don’t be afraid to reach out for help.

Your biggest learnings in life often come from your mistakes and failures.

You may have lived X number of years of your life, but do you really know yourself?
Take time to learn who you REALLY are. What makes you tick, what you like and dislike. How you come across, what your passions are. Who you want to be and what your goals are.
Do it regularly, see the progress you make, see the goals you meet, see how your life changes once you fully know who you are.

Who are three people dead or alive you would invite to dinner?

The Obamas, Martin Scorsese and Tony Robbins.

What has been your biggest learning in the past year?

That our brain tricks us into thinking that our experiences are real, whereas actually we generate themselves.

For example, what’s your experience of lockdown?
Are you frustrated, stir crazy or feeling out of control?
Or are you energised, focused and enjoying every second?

Whatever our experience we are creating it ourselves in the present moment by our thoughts. The only thing we can control is our present moment.
I learnt this two years ago but didn’t understand it until last month. It’s actually life-changing.

We wanted to help you get to know the individual members that make up the PopUp Team so you can understand what makes us tick.

This week we meet our fabulous project manager: Amy How

Who are your biggest inspirations in life and business?

My Mum.
Having battled a lot throughout her life, she always maintained a happy-go-lucky attitude throughout any adversity thrown our way. I owe my work ethic to her. She has taught me that nothing is handed to you, you go out and get it. Working hard brings you satisfaction and opens you up to new opportunities and learning, and I am so grateful for this. She is also the most selfless person I know- which has sometimes been taken advantage of. This in turn has taught me the importance of boundaries. It is important to give to others, but just as important to protect your own peace, your morals and beliefs

The PopUp Business School - The team, the lessons and our inspiring participants.
My choice to leave a steady corporate job has been the best decision I ever made. Joining this team of misfits has been an incredible journey of learning, on a personal and career level. I always get asked what it’s like being one of the only female members of staff, and as a avid feminist I can safely say I have never been so supported and encouraged by the men I work with. I never feel like I am any less part of this team, we are simple one big family. I would list all the things I have learnt but I will leave some of the for the next section…to name a few…how to be more resilient, more adaptable, improve my money management, and to have a voice and not be afraid to share it

My cousin Miranda.
We grew up side by side, and we are so different, our bond amazes me, like ying and yang.. She is currently smashing cancer’s ass at the age of 30 and I have never seen someone take it so in their stride. A diagnosis like that would have knocked most people for six but she is a true fighter, hilarious and an inspiration. She is creating awareness around young people with cancer through social media and building a fantastic community. That no matter what life throws at you, you can handle it.

What song gets you motivated?

I now start my day by listening to 3 songs and dancing around like nobody's watching (I mean…they aren’t). I'll pretend I’m at a concert, in a music video or out and about dancing.
You feel a little silly at first but it is so liberating and gives you such an energy boost. These are a couple of songs from my ‘dance your ass off’ playlist:
Dance Your Ass Off
Basement Jaxx:
Do Your Thing

Katrina and The Waves:
Walking on Sunshine

The Pointer Sisters:
Jump
(pretend you're Hugh Grant in love actually)

Busted:
Crashed the Wedding

Journey:
Don’t Stop Believin’

What is your key piece of advice for small businesses at this time?

Be resilient!
This is a time to get creative and adapt. In light of the tragedy of what is happening, we will never get a chance like this to step back, out of our day to day, to reflect and create something that is important to us and that people need. It would be so easy to give up, to let it all go and try and pick it up when we hit ‘the new normal’, but this is the time to power through adversity and do something amazing, whether this is adapting your current business or creating a new one. This is a huge opportunity.

Who are three people dead or alive you would invite to dinner?

Michelle Obama (Barack can some too if he wants).
I have just finished reading Becoming Michelle Obama and she is inspirational. She has such an interesting journey; working hard to get into law school, working at a top law firm and packing it all in to follow her heart and shifting to a career in helping communities and implementing social change. She is just a hero amongst us in my eyes.

Kris Jenner.
This is probably a controversial one but love them or hate them, the Kardashian clan have built themselves a huge empire with ‘no talent’. I would love to meet the momager herself and pick her entrepreneurial brains and how she made all of her offspring rich and famous. Also she seems like a hoot, loves a wine and knows how to party, can’t go wrong.

Jonathan Van Ness (Who gave you permission to be so fabulous?)
He is hilarious, full of energy and instantly makes you feel like you can do anything. A true inspiration amongst us. Being completely open and vulnerable with who he is and encouraging other people to be the same. Speaking public about his HIV diagnosis was hugely powerful. Such a taboo subject that he is facing head on. The world needs more JVN and more morning coffee dances (if you know you know.)

P.S. I would also have Brene Brown because her research is amazing but I can only have 3 and I wrote these questions and I am really regretting that choice.

What has been your biggest learning in the past year?

It is truly difficult to just name one. This has been a huge year of learning for me.

The one that has resonated the most, and is sometimes the most difficult to implement is leaning into uncertainty. I love structure, and I love a plan, ask anyone who knows me.
I tend to be a little worried when things don’t go to plan (down played this slightly). Travelling with PopUp has meant I have had to adapt to not having certainly in a routine - the strangest thing has been being part of a team that encourages failure - because there is always a lesson to learn right?
I am now trying to embrace the unknown, open myself up to vulnerability & failure and let uncertainty into my life. The need for certainty creeps in every so often, probably more often than I would like, but I remind myself that the only place I can truly find certainty in life is in myself, how I act and how I react to situations is all me, nothing else is certain.

What are some resources that have had the biggest impact on you?

Becoming Michelle Obama -
A hugely inspirational book that I found myself relating too on so many levels. It’s also a great insight into the lives behind the people we admire on TV and in pictures.

The Subtle Art of not giving a F**k - Mark Manson
A no frills, straight talking book that packs a punch. It truly unravelled so many beliefs that I had and that were not serving me in anyway. I would highly recommend it. It’s not a heavy read at all and is full of humour, a bit of swearing…

Brene Brown
Her Netflix special and her Ted talk on vulnerability really hit home for me. Everything from her research to the way she presents is awesome. She articulates a really complex topic really well. I love facts, figures and research, so if you have a brain like mine then Brene’s teaching is great, she gets straight to the point, which I didn’t think was possible when talking about complex emotions, she’s magic!

This week we meet our Co-Founder:
Alan Donegan

Who are your biggest inspirations in life and business?

There are several types.
The personal ones that are close to me and breath daily energy and life into me and then the ones I have never met in the books and courses I have taken.
Katie and Simon have had some of the biggest impacts on my life and their unfaltering belief in me and energy has helped inspire me to press out into the world and make things happen.

Thank you Katie Donegan for being my wife.

Thank you Simon Paine for being my business partner.
I am not sure I would be “here” without you.
Picture
Then from the courses, books, CD sets and more.
Tony Robbins: Wow, you changed the direction of my life with notes from a friend and you continue to impact my life to this day.
Tim Ferriss, Robert Kiyosaki (just his book), Jim Rohn, Richard Bandler and more. They have inspired and driven me. Thank you to the content creators, course and self-help experts that have helped me to become the man I am today. You inspire me to be better. Thank you.

What song gets you motivated?

The Marvel Cinematic Playlist.
As I write I have epic movie music coursing through my body and my energy and desire is lifted and pushed forward. I want music that will drive me onwards and inspire me and this fills me with energy! For the non-marvel fans out there (really?) then just find a cinematic playlist and enjoy the music.

It is important to me that it doesn’t have singing or words as this distracts from my focus on what I am doing at that point.

What is your key piece of advice for small businesses at this time?

Stop focusing on what is missing, what you have lost and what is wrong. Start focusing on what is next, what is possible and what you can do. Your focus determines your results and if you continue to wallow in what you have lost you are building a future of disappointment. Change your focus and you change the course of your destiny. Every single day focus on what you can build and create and work towards the future you desire.

Who are three people dead or alive you would invite to dinner?

Barack and Michelle Obama –
I am counting a couple as one. I own the company so I don’t care about the rules. I think they would have incredible insight, stories and more. I would LOVE to learn from them and be grilled by them

Tim Ferriss –
I think he would be a fascinating guy. He comes across online as a floored genius that suffers just like the rest of us but he has some extreme ideas and his books changed my life so I would LOVE the opportunity to talk to him and chat

The Russo Brothers
–
Joe and Anthony are responsible for the highest grossing movie of all time Marvel's Avengers Endgame and some of my favourite movies of all time. They are an incredible creative duo and the scale of what they built and achieved is phenomenal. I would do anything to have dinner with them and sit and chat and explore and learn wow!

What has been your biggest learning in the past year?

This last year has been an adventure as I set out from PopUp to write movies, explore the world, enjoy financial independence and more. I have learnt so much. My biggest learning is:
The rules are all made up by someone, by society, by religion, by people.
They are ALL MADE UP. Life is what you want to make out of it. As long as you do good by other people you can create any life you want and it is your responsibility to build it. You can take action every day and this compounds over the years to build the life you want. You can build anything.

I can’t believe the incredible life I have today. I also can’t believe it was only 10-12 years ago that I was crying beside the road wondering if I would ever make a success of myself and now I am here! It is incredible what you can build

This belief is spurring me onto the next level of life creation.

What are some resources that have had the biggest impact on you?

The three books that has the biggest impact on me.
That one is easy. I have written about it a lot.
Go here to read the full list: alandonegan.com/blog/book-the-books-that-changed-my-life

Tony Robbins – Notes from a Friend was the one that had the biggest impact because it was the first ever self-development book that I ever read. Someone thrust it into my hands at 21ish and as I read this book it BLEW my mind. The concepts and ideas have continued to shape my thinking ever since. I would love to write a book like this or have this kind of impact for other people.

If you want to get into financial independence then read Mr Money Mustache or listen to ChooseFI.

If you want to learn about business come to a PopUp Business School. This is the education I wish I had had when I was starting up. If I was building a new business I would come and sit in one of the classes and listen as I build and launch.

My advice to anyone that is reading this is that it is time to launch. Stop waiting for the timing to be right and just get on with it. I launched my business in 2008 at the height of the financial crisis and it was painful for some time but I am glad I did it.
If I could make it through that when the good times came it was so so so so much easier.
Just get on with it and take massive decisive action ever day to build the future you desire.
Come back every week as we introduce you to a new member of The PopUp Team!

We wanted to help you get to know the individual members that make up the PopUp Team so you can understand what makes us tick.

This week we meet our Head of Commercial Partnerships: James Headspeath.

Who are your biggest inspirations in life and business?

Having grown up in America, I am obsessed with American sports, mainly American Football. I have been really inspired by NFL Star; Tom Brady.
On paper he is this annoyingly good uber talented athlete who is married to a supermodel, is paid $100m+ a year to throw a ball and has the “perfect” life, in reality nobody thought he was very good and no professional team wanted to sign him, he had to spend a lot of time working his way up. He’s arguably the greatest American sports star ever, if not one of the best athletes in the world and he achieved it all through sheer hard work. Prior to discovering his story, I was convinced “successful” people were the lucky ones, I was a perennial underachiever at school and thought that was my destiny. Reading his story was a revelation and helped motivate me to realise anyone can achieve anything through hard work.
I haven’t signed any million dollar endorsement deals or married a supermodel since, but have gone onto achieve some cool things like finishing the Ironman triathlon (dubbed the hardest single day race on earth) and making over £1m in sales for PopUp, which is credit to my hard work not some innate talent I possess.

In business I am massively inspired by everyone at PopUp, the individual stories of participants who strive to create something out of nothing that makes it all worthwhile.

What song gets you motivated?

Natural by Imagine Dragons

What is your key piece of advice for small businesses at this time?

Unless you are a scientist working on a cure, you can’t do anything about the situation, so stop worrying and just make the most of it. In 2008 during the last financial crash I spent about a year out of work looking for a job, I never want to be in the position ever again.
Don’t be REACTIVE to the environment, be PROACTIVE. Life is a poker game, some of us have better cards than others, but the winner is he/she who plays their hand the best way.

Who are three people dead or alive you would invite to dinner?

  • Abraham Lincoln; He led the union to victory in the American Civil War, freed slaves and surrounded himself with his rivals. Arguably one of the greatest political leaders of all time, not sure where I’d start with the questions, but the conversation would be fascinating.
  • Leonardo Da Vinci; I’d love to ask him how someone born out of wedlock (which was more significant then), who had no formal education, and didn’t regard himself as ‘talented’ achieved so many great things?
  • Warren Buffet; Where to begin?

What has been your biggest learning in the past year?

Certainty and Uncertainty and why people need them.
Learning how to give people the former has saved this company a lot of money!

What are some resources that have had the biggest impact on you?

  • The Volunteer by Jack Fairweather:
Which is about Wiltold Pilecki a Polish resistance fighter who volunteered to go to Auschwitz to disrupt it from inside, it is an incredibly moving, harrowing yet an inspirational true story. It’s only a matter of time before it’s turned into a Steven Spielberg film. It’s not got anything to do with business, however it’s a great reminder that when you are down it could be worse, but the human mind can endure anything as long as you remain positive.
  • YES, 50 Secrets from the Science of Persuasion by Noah Goldstein, Steve Martin and Robert Cialdini:
This was one of the first books I read when I joined PopUp, and believe it should be essential reading for anyone in sales. There are numerous things in here that I have implemented that have made us money. It’s basically an actionable version of Influence which is also written by Robert Cialdini, it is also a very good book, but is more theoretical, this has lots more real world examples and is an easy read.
  • Shoe Dog by Phil Knight:
Which is about the story of Nike, which covers its early years. We often forget big multinational companies were once startups, it’s incredible how uncertain their future was, at multiple times I wondered what was going to happen next and whether or not they’d go bust, only to have to remind myself they are fine.

We wanted to help you get to know the individual members that make up the PopUp Team so you can understand what makes us tick.

Beginning with our COO:
Henry Nicholson.

Who are your biggest inspirations in life and business?

Alan Donegan & Simon Paine in both I think!
When I joined PopUp 6 years ago, I didn’t really know what was going on, what I wanted to be doing or what direction to even start. Over the past 6 years I’ve had an immense journey with them, teaching and coaching each other through all manners of things
Dave Grohl
Seems like an obvious choice for some but I was a huge fan of this guy through my childhood (see 16 y/o henry for the hair) but the sheer drive, focus and creativity of this guy always amazed me and inspired me to do things. Inspired me to write music, inspired me not to settle for a comfortable life doing the easy stuff. I read his biography when it came out in 2012 and it changed how I looked at certain challenges and saw opportunities.

What song gets you motivated?

The Ecstasy of Gold – Live by Metalica – this track f*cking goes off. Feel unstoppable.
I have a Spotify playlist of pre-talk pump-ups that you can find below:

What is your key piece of advice for small businesses at this time?

Create good habits & use deadlines.
The more you can streamline yourself now, the less time things will take you later down the line. For example, your accounts as a small businesses. Do it monthly. Set a deadline each month or a rule to get it done, no matter how much or as little as you’ve sold. Because fast forward two years’ time when this thing is kicking off… it’s going to be really painful if you’re still haphazardly managing your cash. You need to know where your cash is, what you have available and where you’re spending. You cannot add anyone else to your process if it’s a mess. Even an accountant won’t help, they will just add pressure. Get on it early, get streamlined now. Save yourself the time, money and pain in the future.

Who are three people dead or alive you would invite to dinner?

  • Kurt Cobain
  • James Watt
  • Rob Dyrdek
  • Adding Gordon Ramsay to the cooking process for the creative insults

What has been your biggest learning in the past year?

Helping to take PopUp to the next level & stepping up to a crucial role.
This year I took over the whole finance, legal and admin part of PopUp - a world I knew little about. My learnings going from managing finance for my side-hustle web design agency to managing that of a ¾ million company are tremendous. A steep (and unexpected) learning curve really throws you in to action and learn things you wouldn’t otherwise try.

Managing people.
It seems that year on year at PopUp we get new blood in the team which is exciting.
But with that comes a whole new plethora of challenges, habits and beliefs. This year I’ve very much been on the front lines within PopUp managing people and supporting them through their own journeys, much like my own. Managing people is one of the hardest but most rewarding projects you can do. You learn a lot about yourself, what drives people, what motivates people.
And let me tell you… it’s not just in-work challenges you’ll be faced with… it gets personal.

What are some resources that have had the biggest impact on you?

Come back every week as we introduce you to a new member of The PopUp Team!

<![CDATA[Weebly S.E.O Guide - How to Find Customers In Your Sleep]]>Thu, 07 Dec 2017 12:08:34 GMThttps://www.popupbusinessschool.co.uk/hub-articles/weebly-seo-guide-how-to-find-customers-in-your-sleep
SEO is a bit of a dark art to a lot of people. Google has an algorithm with well over 200 different factors it takes into consideration to decide it’s ranking order.
But if you nail the basics of Weebly SEO you can start ranking and bringing in some free traffic!

This is for people who have established their business enough to go from the .weebly.com websites to just their domain name .com. It can be used with the .weebly.com but it might not be as effective.
The purpose of Weebly SEO is all about getting your weebly website in front of your customers when they’re looking to buy something. This is what’s known as buyer intent searches.
For instance if you look up “cute cats” you probably don’t intend to buy anything, you just want to look at cute cats, but if you looked up “cute cat mugs” there’s a much higher chance that you are specifically looking to buy cute cat mugs. This is important if you have some sort of store on your site as each product page can be found on Google.
I personally have a website where I review mattresses and pillows, I make money through affiliate links so I want people to land on my website when they’re mid buying process. For example I have this guide to mattress toppers which I want to rank for the phrase “best mattress toppers uk”, people looking for the best one are likely looking to buy one so it has the right buyer intent, and if you type that into google I’m currently bouncing between first and second position.
Ideal!
(For full disclosure I actually use Wordpress not Weebly, I find it easier to use because I used it first but these basic principles are true no matter what website builder you use.
I know the friendly folks at the PopUp Business School teach you to make a website with Weebly so I’m sticking to a Weebly SEO Guide.)
Now if you have a business it’ll likely be a little bit different, you might want to rank for a phrase like “flower delivery kent” or “Window cleaner manchester”.
The more people there are trying to rank for the same phrase the harder it’s going to be to get to the top but don’t worry we can do it!
The Most Important Weebly SEO Tip is....
Make sure your website has a very clear topic.
Because you have to think of Google as a hyper intelligent baby.
It has some of the most advanced algorithms and artificial intelligence running it, but it’s still a machine. So if you have a website all about laundry, unless you make that absolute clear in writing it’s going to have no idea.
It doesn’t know what a picture of a washing machine is. If your talking about dirty washing it might group you together with laundry, but it could also group you in with washing machines for sale, parent forums talking about washing, or laundry services in america when you're based in liverpool. So we have to make it crystal clear what we are and what we’re talking about.
How do we do that?
With this Weebly SEO Checklist!
This is a checklist you can use for what’s known as On-page SEO for any page on your website you want to rank in Google.
You can use it in for your homepage or any blog post you write that you want to get found for.

I helped out with the SEO of Pop Up Business Schools article on How To Start A Business Without Spending Money and this is the exact checklist I used.
Check your targeting exactly the right phrase

You can download a free Google Chrome plugin called Keywords Everywhere.
You install it and when you search something in Google it shows you roughly (very roughly) how many people search it per month.
Make sure you set it to UK otherwise you’ll get the global searches which often isn’t useful.

So I typed in: "How to start a Business without Spending Money" and found it gets zero searches…
and there’s the PopUp Business School proudly on the first page with no one to look at it.
Oops!
So I tried a few variations until I found that about 300 people per month search: "How to start a Business with No Money." It’s such a small difference but the front page of Google is completely different for both.
So that’s what we focused on.

A free account at KWFinder can also be good at giving similar phrase suggestions so you can find the one you want.
As a side this is a great buyer intent search as it’s people looking to start a business for free who are ideal customers for the PopUp Business School, especially because they offer free courses!

Use Target Keyword in Heading

Now we know what our search term is we want to optimise for it.
So let’s start by putting it in the heading. That’s under Page Title in the Weebly Editor.
If it’s a long phrase then the whole thing can be used as the heading but if it’s a short phrase then consider spicing it up but still including the exact phrase.
So you might have “flower shop kent - Fresh Flowers Great Prices”
You want your heading to be about 55 characters or less so it all fits in the Google Search Display.
Use your Keyword in your Page Description

In Weebly there’s an advanced setting where you can change the page description, this is what comes up under your heading in the Google Search and is limited to 160 characters.
So just write a little bit about what’s in your page and be sure to use the phrase you’re trying to optimise for.
Use Target Keyword in URL

You want your url to include all the words from the phrase you’re trying to rank for. So for our how to start a business guide, sticking with the format you’d want: http://www.popupbusinessschool.co.uk/popup-online-course/step-3-how-to-start-without-spending-money
It doesn't need the word business twice but I like to keep the phrase all together.
Use Target Keyword in Text

Use your keyword in the first paragraph or at least the first 100 words, this lets Google
(and your readers) know exactly what the article is about.

You’ll notice I did it in this article with the phrase "Weebly SEO."
This just makes it clear to everyone what to expect in the article and exactly what it’s about.
Sprinkle your Exact Keyword through the Text

Ideally you want to it to be about 1% of the total word count but the bigger the keyword the harder that is. For “how to start a business without spending money” I just wanted to make sure it was used in the opening, the conclusion, and a couple times throughout.
In a subheading or two is also a good idea.

But for this article I want the phrase "Weebly SEO" to be used more often.
It’s a nice short phrase so it’s easy to keep bringing up naturally.
Rename images before you upload

Before you upload images name one of them your keyword and the rest alternatives to your keyword.

This only works if you upload your own images but naming the files the keyword and the logical variations of the keyword as that all helps google understand exactly what the page is talking about.
Make sure you write for other humans!
I’ve talked a lot about getting things just right for a robot but don’t forget that it’s other humans who are going to be reading it and ultimately buying something so you want to make sure they understand what you’re on about. And it seems to be that user experience is becoming more and more of a ranking factor but it’s hard to say.
Other SEO Factors

This is all your on page SEO.
It focuses on getting your page just right so google can understand it.
But there are also off page factors and the biggest of those being links.

If reputable people link to your site then that acts kinda like a vote in Google's eyes.
The more and higher quality votes the higher you rank. But getting real link is hard and or expensive so not something to worry about.
The biggest impact will be making sure your on-page Weebly SEO is as good as possible.

If you have some sort of local business selling a service or have a shop then head over to Google My Business and go through those guides so you can appear as a business listing in front of your customers. This is a handy sort of cheat way to get to the top of Google for a local search term like "kent flower delivery."
A Couple Of Other Weebly SEO Tips:
The Google Search Console
Google likes other Google products, one of the main ones for SEO is their Webmaster Tools, this lets you submit your website to google and keep an eye on what searches you show up for.

The main thing you want to do is sign up, follow the steps it gives you so tell it your site, what language it is, what country you want to target and submit a sitemap.
A sitemap is literally a map of all the pages on your site.
Now weebly is super handy because they automatically generate you one at yourweeblywebsite.co.uk/sitemap.xml just put /sitemap.xml and a weird looking page with lots of lines of code will appear. Ignore all that and just copy and paste the address into where it asks you in the google search console.
How Long Does It Take?

I’m sure you're eager to get to the top of Google and have all these lovely customers show up on your site but unfortunately it takes time. Google has to crawl through thousands up thousands of websites every hour let a lone day so it takes time, but this isn’t a sprint so hang tight and let the results of your efforts slowly build up.
An Experiment

A final experiment just for fun before I finish.
If a phrase appears in your writing on any given page of a website it should appear in Google for that phrase.
Now, there are millions of pages with words like “and” so you’ll never appear for stuff like that, but if I talk about Kieran MacRaes crazy colour blind purple chickens, because I’m Kieran and I want to show off Kieran MacRaes crazy colour blind purple chickens then logically I should appear in Google for that phrase.

No one else has talked about Kieran MacRaes crazy colour blind purple chickens so this should certainly be the main result. Not sure how long that’ll take but I’m excited to see if it works!

<![CDATA[5 steps to rewriting your new business story]]>Wed, 27 Sep 2017 11:34:39 GMThttps://www.popupbusinessschool.co.uk/hub-articles/5-steps-to-rewriting-your-new-business-storyA Guest Blog by PopUp Past Participant - Katherine Ledger
I’m Katherine Ledger. I am a brand storyteller and content marketer.
Two years ago, becoming a bit disillusioned with the corporate world, I left it suddenly, falling off a loft ladder, breaking my back!

Spending a year recovering, I decided to start a new chapter of my life, follow my heart and launch my business, Copy That Sells. I wanted to help smaller companies cleverly weave business storytelling throughout their marketing content, creating an emotional connection with clients, converting into potential sales. Copy that Sells.
Writing an exciting new chapter as a business startup, I wanted it to be perfect! Armed with my marketing plan, I had great intentions. Little did I know how rocky my business journey would be! Over the year I built an impressive portfolio of new and repeat clients.
However, every month my pockets became lighter as I invested hard earned savings, time and effort into building my perfect business.
Thankfully I realised done is better than perfect.
There is another way.
Enter the PopUp Business School in Reading! They are a wonderful business resource run by Alan, Simon, Henry and Jack. They go around the UK giving straight talking practical advice to small businesses starting out. It's full of inspirational people all wanting to succeed together.
Arriving on my first day, with many battle scars, I felt a huge weight lifting.
The coaches told me:
"You don’t have to spend lots of money building a business."
"You can get up and running from day 1!"
"We will help you!”
Rather than punishing myself for costly mistakes made, I experienced a life-changing light bulb moment of self-discovery at the PopUp Business School
“We all make mistakes. We’re only human. You can turn a corner and change direction. You can rewrite a new chapter. You can have the life you choose. We can’t turn back time but we can regroup and re-evaluate.”
So I am pausing to regroup on the next (more cost-effective) leg of my journey. Here are some important checkpoints which might help you on yours.
1.Gather your thoughts and write them down.
However whacky or far-fetched, don’t discount a single one. Put them on a mind map or sketch pad. Enlist a trusted friend or two to help you do that. Keep reflecting on those random concepts and you will soon start joining the dots to form the basis of a plan, guided by your heart.
2. Get the right know how.
Look up and attend the next PopUp Business School in your area and join their facebook community or other resources available to you.
We are all in the same boat together (and we all wear life jackets!)
3. Get accountability.
Find someone on the same wavelength who can join you on the journey. No man is an island. You can share plans, dreams, hopes and disappointments and be cheer leaders for each other, keeping focused and motivated. My buddy, Heather Mills, Duck Soup HR keeps me on track!
4. Get a steer.
If you can’t work things out with friends on the journey, consider a coach who can throw light on why you’re stuck and help you turn around and get moving again. Richard Branson, 50 years an entrepreneur, wisely said:
‘Turning points, while they often come from moments of darkness, can steer us in the right direction of great light… or light bulb moments’.
5. Just do it… one bite at a time.
In the words of Brian Tracy ‘Eat that Frog’. Get out there testing your idea one step at a time. Find people to pay for it, so you can ‘accumulate to speculate’ rather than the other way round. The PopUp Business school taught me ‘Done is better than perfect’.
So it’s time to get this blog done and dusted rather than tinkering with every tiny detail!
Lastly, this new chapter is meant to be fun and enjoyable, so take time out to celebrate every checkpoint of your journey. If I can rise up like a Phoenix from the ashes after falling out of my loft and breaking my back, you can do this too! Take control and write your own life and business story. It’s yours, not someone else’s. You can have the life you choose as long you follow your heart.
Don’t compromise or procrastinate. Just do it.
Your time is now!
